Mary Schwing finishes her third CrossFit Games with a second place finish. This podium finish makes the third for Schwing, who finished 1st in 2012 and 3rd in 2013.

They didn’t need to win Event 8 to stay in the top three, but CrossFit 808 did anyway. Not only did they win, they set an event record with a time of 9:40.
The overhead squats in this event are deceptive. Although there are only seven of them, the 49 pull-ups fatigue the shoulders and cause many athletes to stall out, struggling to get below parallel with the bar overhead.
Showing off their well-rounded team, the athletes of CrossFit 808 had no problem finishing the work. Their athletes worked smoothly through their reps, with Umeda finishing up the overhead squats, clinching the win for her team.
“We did it. Event record!” Umeda said after the event. “Out there you never really know. We knew we took first, but then we heard the announcer say it was the event record by a minute and that was even better.”
“We’re so excited for the Games,” she said. “Ready for a little break first, though!”

Hawaii’s golden girl, Elyse Umeda, dominated the 2011 Northern California Regional.
At the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games, you’ll see many of your favorite female athletes for the women’s competition. But this year’s Games season opened up the competition to a much wider group of competitors. Those who weren’t able to compete in previous years will show their faces at the Home Depot Center this year. With 47 women competing, 28 did not compete in the individual 2010 Games level. Elyse Umeda of CrossFit 808 actually qualified for the 2009 CrossFit Games but was unable to compete due to an illness in the family. For her, 2010 was a redemption year and she made the most of it, finishing 11th at the Games in a tribute to her grandfather.
In this video shot in the warm-up area at the Home Depot Center, Umeda talks about what drove her to get back to the Games, what it felt like to finally get to compete in the test of the world's fittest, and how she discovered the sport of fitness.

“The Women of the 2010 CrossFit Games”

This video is a tribute to the women of the 2010 CrossFit Games. CrossFit differs from most sports in that its women are on an equal footing with its men. The top female CrossFitter will win the same amount of money as the top male CrossFitter in 2011, $250,000. CrossFit women routinely beat men on workouts. 2010 CrossFit Games champion Kristan Clever has taken the top score on the mainsite WOD multiple times, even outperforming Austin Malleolo, who took 6th place at the 2010 Games.
Whereas gymnastics confines ring exercises to male athletes, CrossFit demands upper-body intensive movements such as ring muscle-ups, handstand push-ups, and rope climbs from its female athletes. This is the sport of fitness, and the real world does not vary its demands according to the sex of an individual. The result is a female athlete that is far more capable and confident than is the norm outside of CrossFit.

Elyse Umeda went from coaching in the gym to owning her own CrossFit gym.
A hobby became a passion. A dream became a business.
Elyse Umeda's leap of faith when changing careers — from coaching basketball to starting her own CrossFit affiliate gym — has been the right move. And, given the demand at her space on Puuhale Road, it's already proven to be a successful one.
The 2003 Punahou School graduate rolled up the door of her "box" Feb. 22. Before the end of the 12-hour day, the 26-year-old Umeda had run out of membership applications and waivers.
"The support I've had from friends and family has been unbelievable," said Umeda, who helped Punahou to a state basketball championship and Princeton to an Ivy League title during her four seasons with the Tigers. "But we won't get too big. We'll cap membership at 200 and we can take 15 to 20 per class."
"We never want to lose the personal touch."
